Fibre-optic Tech: Making Smart Cities a Reality

16 August 2019

With continuous population growth and urbanisation, it is important to think about economic, social and environmental sustainability. A tactic that is being put in place to encourage this is connected ‘Smart Cities’. High-speed fibre networks will be necessary to make the Smart City concept a reality.

What is a Smart City?

Although there are many definitions of smart cities, it is loosely described as a framework that uses communication technologies to promote sustainable practices including public health, transportation and safety. Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Cities use an intelligent network of connected ‘smart objects’ to transmit data and communicate with one another.

Connecting smart devices with a city’s infrastructure can provide a whole new world of opportunity to transform services, analyse data and deliver efficiency. A real-life example of this is the connected car. Connected cars are equipped with internet access that allows data to be sent to and from the vehicle. One application of this technology allows the car to communicate with parking meters near their destination and direct the driver to available spaces. Gartner estimates that over 250 million connected cars will be on the roads by 2020, showing how fast this modernisation is set to happen.

Network essentials for Smart Cities

Wireless networks are key to Smart Cities, as connecting a whole city to ‘smart objects’ directly via cables is unrealistic. However in order to carry out wireless successfully, a reliable back-haul network needs to be in place. This is where cables come in. A successful back-haul line will create high bandwidth links throughout the city to act as a channel to shorten the run between cables and assets.

Fibre-optic cabling will be essential to these back-haul networks due to their ability to provide large volumes of bandwidth to transmit data whilst handling long distances. In addition, Media Converters will be important in carrying out fibre networks to provide fibre-to-Ethernet interconnections.

Network Endurance

With so many people set to be constantly relying on Smart Cities, ensuring that fibre networks are reliable is a critical success factor. Forward-thinking tech will be needed to keep networks up and running at all times and avoid downtime.

TXO Optics buffer stock model is perfect for this scenario. This means that if customers share a forecast with us for products they use over a certain period (usually 1 year), we can hold a buffer stock of optical transceivers or cables here on-site for your exclusive use.
