An introduction to fibre optic PLC splitters

Planar Lightwave Circuit Splitters (commonly known as PLC splitters) are a modern technology used to separate or combine optical signals. They divide one or two light beams of data into multiple, or vice versa, and are generally used to provide a low-cost light distribution solution for applications where larger split configurations are required. These applications include Passive Optical Networks (PON), such as EPON, GPON and FTTx. PLC splitters are widely installed between the OLT and ONT in the network.

 

Different types of PLC splitters

Splitters are categorised by the PLC splitter chip they use. Customers can choose different input and output numbers depending on subscriber conditions / cable length. Bare fibre: Bare fibre optic splitters are generally used in PON networks. They can be spliced freely according to the applications and require the least space during cabling by being installed in the pigtail cassette, test instrument and WDM system.

Blockless: Blockless splitters have a stronger fibre protection than bare fibre. Their main use is in various connection and distribution boxes or network cabinets.

Fanout: Fanout splitters add a length of ribbon fibre terminated with fanout kit behind the PLC split chip.
